  •    Welcome to Mr. Gibbs’ fifth grade Language Arts class. The following is useful information for the    year:
  • Independent Reading: Each child will be expected to read a minimum of 20 books. The responses for these books will come in many forms including: reports, nightly written responses, oral responses, book reviews, and persuasion paragraphs. Children should read nightly to accomplish this goal. When a child completes a book, he or she will complete an exit summary which is readily available in the classroom.
  • Guided Reading:  Children’s Developmental Reading Level will be determined by the middle of October and posted in their grade book. Children should have a level of 50 or greater by the end of the year.
  • Whole class reading:  We will be using many different texts.
  • Assessments:  Tests, Quizzes, Written and Oral Responses
  • Word Study: Spelling and vocabulary developmental are integrated.  The children will receive the Spelling Contract guidelines during the first week.
  • Writing: Written composition will be taught daily. Opportunities for written composition include daily and process writing.
